Imagine sprinting toward a finish line but having no ability to slow down or stop. Or lifting a heavy object but being unable to lower it safely.
Power without control can become dangerous! In fitness, deceleration is the ability to slow or stop movement by absorbing and controlling force.
Your muscles often do this through eccentric contractions - when they lengthen under tension, like your quads working as you go down stairs.
While we often celebrate how fast someone can run, how high they can jump, or how much they can lift, the ability to absorb force, land safely, and change direction with control is equally valuable.
Training these skills can support better movement mechanics and prepare us for everyday physical demands. After all, what good is generating force if we can't manage it?
The same principle applies to leadership. Having influence, authority, or the ability to act quickly doesn't mean every situation calls for full force. Sometimes the most effective response is to slow down, listen, assess, or exercise restraint.
Healthy leaders understand that power isn't just about what they can do - it's about knowing when, how, and how much to use.
CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK:
Beginner: Practice 2 sets of 5 slow, controlled sit-to-stands, taking 3 seconds to lower yourself into a sturdy chair.
Intermediate: Try 2 sets of 5 step-downs from a low step, controlling your descent without dropping.
Advanced: If experienced with jumping, try 2 sets of 5 small jumps, focusing on soft, balanced landings and a controlled stop.
NEXT STEPS:
