Strength In Your Feet: Standing Your Ground In a Shifting Environment

Your feet are some of the smallest parts of the body,

yet among the most used -

and often the most overlooked.

Did you know each foot has 26 bones, 30 joints, and over 20 muscles that give it structure and function?

Your feet carry your full body weight and absorb the impact of every step, making them the foundation of daily movement.

When they’re weak or neglected, the body compensates - affecting posture, movement, and long-term health.

Maybe you deal with plantar fasciitis, uneven shoe wear, or were simply born flat-footed.

Whatever your starting point, your feet can be trained and strengthened.

Many of the issues we see don’t start at the surface - they’re influenced by the surrounding muscle chains.

That’s why the principle matters: stretch and relieve tension in overactive muscles, activate the right muscles, then integrate your muscle groups.

The same is true in leadership.

Strengthen the foundation first.

What you build on determines how long you last.

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK:

Try these tips for improved foot and ankle strengthening:

  • Stretch:

    • Foam roll: if you have access to one (inner and outer leg) or perform static hamstring or quadricep stretch

  • Activate: [rounds x reps] (modifcation = lower reps)

    • Toe Crunch: Grab a small object with your toes. [3x12]

    • Toe Raise: 1 round toes inward, another round toes straight ahead. [3x12]

    • Glute Bridge: same as before [3x12]

  • Integrate: (with shoes off and just body weight)

    • Single Leg Balance: [3x10 sec]

    • Single leg squat (advanced): Use a chair as a guide, or hold onto a wall to help on descent and ascent. [3x5]

REFLECTION:

  • What is the state of your feet? Are they fit for duty?

  • What is one small yet frequently used and often overlooked component of your leadership that relates to your foundation?

  • What do you need to strengthen to give yourself the best chance of a healthier you?
