Train Your Explosive Power
Have you ever watched someone jump for a basketball, sprint off the starting line, or leap over a puddle? These explosive movements rely on more than muscular strength! Your nervous system plays a critical role in how quickly your muscles activate and produce force. One way we train this is through plyometrics - exercises that use a rapid stretch and contraction of the muscles, much like stretching and releasing a rubber band. This is called the stretch-shortening cycle.
Why care? As we age, we tend to lose muscular power faster than strength. Training our muscles and nervous system to work together quickly can help preserve our ability to move confidently and respond to physical demands. Think jumping, hopping, skipping, or even practicing quick, controlled movements from a chair.
But here's the catch: having the ability to produce power doesn't mean we always have the capacity to perform at our best. Fatigue, inadequate recovery, and physical conditioning can all affect performance. The same is true in leadership. We can have tremendous skills, knowledge, and potential, but something may still be limiting our ability to put them to work.
CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK:
Beginner: Try 2 sets of 5 brisk sit-to-stands from a sturdy chair or bench, returning slowly and with control.
Intermediate: Add a hop at the top as you do 2 sets of 5 sit-to-stands.
Advanced: Remove the chair, try 2 sets of 5 squat jumps, resting 30 seconds between sets.
NEXT STEPS:
